Trigeminal neuralgia is a rare condition that causes severe, intermittent bouts or constant pain to the face. The most common locations for the pain associated with trigeminal neuralgia are the lower part of the facial area; including the mouth, lips, and cheeks. Most patients have reported this pain to feel like a severe stabbing sensation or a lightning bolt to the face. This recurring pain is caused by swelling (inflammation) of or around the trigeminal nerve, which is one of the largest cranial nerves and is divided into three separate branches. Trigeminal neuralgia is also referred to as "tic douloureux", because of the facial spasms that occasionally accompany the intense, shooting pain.
